Training Timer Ticks Toward ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon

Event date: Thursday, December 21, 2006, from 1:38 PM to 1:38 PM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Training Timer Ticks Toward ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon
Dec. 24 Marks Milestone for Runners; 13.1 Weeks to Go Until Inaugural Race
(Dec. 21, 2006, ATLANTA) – In a few short days, the training timer for the ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon begins its final countdown to the inaugural March 25, 2007 race. Sunday, December 24 will mark exactly 13 weeks and 1 day to the event, the minimum, recommended training time for the full marathon (26.2 miles) or the half marathon (13.1 miles).
"It is particularly important that individuals who have never Participated in a marathon, or have not trained in some time, to consult with a physician," said Dr. Laurence Sperling, MD, associate professor of Medicine in the Emory University School of Medicine and Director of Preventative Cardiology. "Discuss your goals and the training schedule you plan to implement, and work with him or her to determine your fitness level and identify any health risk factors you may have.

"The most challenging aspect of running a long-distance race is the discipline necessary for adequate training,” Sperling continued. "Whether you are a veteran or novice runner, a walker or a wheeler, for an injury-free long distance run, you need to follow a training regimen focused on progressively longer endurance-building runs each week, with shorter maintenance runs in between. That is why beginning a training program now is so important."

Emory Healthcare, a race sponsor and medical provider for the March event, will host three running clinics in the new year to assist both experienced and new runners. The ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon race organizers also offer recommendations on training programs. Details are posted in the official race web site, www.inggeorgiamarathon.com.

#1 – Saturday, January 20, 8:00 a.m. at Big Peach Running Company, Buckhead. Mike Cosentino, founder of Big Peach will discuss choosing the right shoes and running apparel for your body.

#2 – Saturday, February 3, 1:00 p.m. at REI Atlanta, Clairmont Road. Dr. Ken Maunter, Emory Orthopaedist and finisher of 2006 ING New York City Marathon will discuss Injury Prevention and Race Day Tips.

#3 – Saturday, March 3, 1:00 p.m. at Dicks Sporting Goods, Buckhead. Guest speaker and topic to be announced.

“This is a perfect time for people to take on a long-distance race,” said Victoria Seahorn, race director of the ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon. “With the end of the year, we all make New Year’s resolutions and what better motivation to start the year than to be part of Georgia’s first-ever neighborhood marathon and half-marathon.”
Registrations just surpassed the half-way mark today, as over 7,500 people have acquired their race numbers for both the marathon and half marathon. The wheelchair participants will compete on the same half-marathon course, and 19 athletes are already registered for this event. The event is limited to 15,000 participants. Participants save money by registering in 2006; the registration fees increase to $75 (half marathon/wheelchair half marathon) and $95 (marathon) as of January 1, 2007.
